Pharmacological effects:

Norfloxacin is quinolone antibiotic with a broad spectrum activity. Antibacterial effects arises from the inactivating enzyme DNA-gyrase. DNA-gyrase is essential enzyme responsible for the replication of bacterial genetic material. As a result, bacteria loose their ability to replicate and repair themselves. This is ultimately fatal for the microorganisms. Norfloxacin is effective against the majority of gram negative microorganisms and some positive bacteria.

Indications: Norfloxacin is prescribed for the treatment of the following infections:

• Acute and chronic infections of the urinary system
• Chronic bacterial prostatitis
• Sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea
• Salmonella infection
• Dysenteria
• Prophylaxis of stomach infections

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Allergy to any components of the preparation.
• Hypersensitivity to other quinolone antibiotics
• Severe liver disease
• Kidney disease
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
