Drug name: Sumamed(Brand Azithromycin)

Active substance: Azithromycin

Pharmacological effects: Sumamed is a macrolide antibiotic that exerts bacteriostatic action against wide variety of bacteria including gram positive and gram negative microorganisms. Sumamed works by inactivating the biosynthesis of proteins in bacterial cell. These proteins are essential for the bacterial to replicate. As a result bacteria loose the ability to reproduce and then die. In increased doses Sumamed may exert bactericidal action.

Indications: Sumamed is prescribed for treating the following infectious diseases:

• Lower and upper respiratory system infections
• ENT infections(ear, nose and throat)
• Infections of the urogenital system
• Infections of the skin and soft tissue
• Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, soft chancer

Warnings and Precautions: Sumamed should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity or allergy to any components of the preparation.
• Liver dysfunction
• Kidney dysfunction
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Severe cardiovascular diseases
• Colitis related to antibacterial therapy
• Candida infections

Sumamed Side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. • The most common Sumamed side effects include: upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
• The less common Sumamed side effects include: wheezing, problems with heart rhythm, difficult breathing and swallowing, severe bloody diarrhea, yellowing of the skin and eyes

• Antacids may reduce the absorption of Sumamed into the blodo circulation leading to decreased therapeutic activity
• The effect of blood thinners(Warfarin) may be enhanced while taking Sumamed. This may result in bleedings.
• Sumamed may make oral contraceptives less effective
• Sumamed metabolism and blood levels might be changed when is used in combination with Alfentanil, Tacrolimus, Cyclosporine, Disopyramide,, Phenytoin, Triazolam, Bromocriptine,
