Drug name: Generic Augmentin

Active substance: Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid

Pharmacological effects: Generic Augmentin consists of 2 active substances like clavulanic acid and amoxicillin. Amoxicillin a beta-lactam aminopenicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting the formation of the bacterial cell wall. Amoxicillin inhibits the production of certain enzymes that are responsible for the production of structural proteins of the bacterial cells walls. Amoxicillin doesn't act on bacteria that produces beta-lactamase. Beta-lactamase is a compound that breaks down beta-lactam ring in penicillin antibiotics making them ineffective.

Generic Augmentin also contains clavulanic acid. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that works by inactivating beta-lactamase. Thus, clavulanic acid makes possible for amoxicillin to exert bactericidal action against microorganisms that produce beta-lactamase

Indications: Generic Augmentin is effective only against bacteria susceptible to amoxicillin, including bacteria that produce beta-lactamase. Augmentin is approved for treating the following infectious diseases:

• Infections that affect ears, nose or throat(ENT infections)
• Infectious diseases of the urogenital tract
• Infections of the soft tissue and skin
• Infections that affect lower airways
• Infections that affect gastrointestinal system

Augmentin should not be indicated in viral infections

Warnings and Precautions: Augmentin should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity or allergy to any components of the preparations.
• Liver diseases such liver cirrhosis or liver failure
• Kidney diseases
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding

• Infectious mononucleosis
• Severe diarrhea associated with antibiotics therapy
• Fungal infections
