Drug name: Generic Cipro

Active substance: Ciprofloxacin

Pharmacological effects: Cipro or ciprofloxacin is in a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolone.

Cipro is a broad spectrum antibiotic with bactericidal properties. Cipro is effective against bacteria resistant to penicillin and cephalosporin type antibiotics. Bactericidal action of Cipro is related to inhibiting the enzyme DNA-gyrase. This enzyme is responsible for the DNA replication of the bacterial cell. As a result, bacteria can not multiply and repair themselves and then perish.

Indications: Cirpo is approved to treat infections caused by susceptible to ciprofloxacin infections:

• Upper and lower respiratory system infections
• Ear, nose and throat infection
• Infections that affect eyes
• Urinary system infections
• Bacterial infections of the prostate gland
• Bacterial infections of the abdominal cavity
• Infections of the gastrointestinal tract
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Blood infection
• Gonorrhea

In children Cirpo may be indicated in:

• Urinary system infections
• Lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• Prevention and treatment of anthrax

Cipro is not approved to treat viral infections

Warnings and Precautions: Cipro should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity or allergy to any components of the preparation.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• History of tendon disease
• Severe liver and kidney disease
• Children and adolescent age
• Elderly age

Talk with your health care provide if any of the following health problems apply to you:

• Liver or kidney dysfunction
• Epilepsy(seizures)
• CNS disease
• Deficiency of G6PD

Do not drive or operate any machinery while the treatment with Cipro.

Cipro may make your skin more sensitive to UV light. Avoid direct UV light while the treatment with Cipro.

Cipro side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. In the following paragraph we want to underline the most serious and frequent side effect of Cipro that were identified by the drug manufacturers. The possibility of the adverse effect manifestation depends only on the individual and his specific traits.

• The most common Cipro side effects include: nausea, diarrhea, skin rash
• The less common Cipro side effects include: loss of appetite, vaginal candida infection, abdominal pain, asthenia, feelings of tiredness

Cipro may increase blood levels of the following medicines: cyclosoprin, clozapine, duloxetine, glibenclamide, methotrexate, ropinirole, tizanidine, zolmitriptan
