Active substance: Clotrimazole

Pharmacological effects: Clotrimazole belongs to a group of drugs called antimycotics. The drug is used locally or intra-vaginally and topically. Clotrimazole works by decreasing the synthesis of ergosterol which is a part of a fungal cell wall, this leads to changes in the structure and permeability of the cell wall. In low concentrations the drug exerts fungi-static activity and in high concentration fungicidal activity. In fungicidal concentrations the drug also interacts with the mitochondrial and peroxidative enzymes which results in increased concentration of hydrogen peroxide this also promotes the destruction of fungal cells.

Indications: The drug is indicated in treatment of the following conditions fungal skin and mucous membrane infections:

• Dermatomicosis
• Dermatographia
• Trichophytia
• Epidermophitia
• Microsporia
• Candidiasis
• Stomatitis
• Interdigital fungal erosion
• Fungal paronychia
• Mycosis complicated by secondary piodermia
• Candidal Vulvitis
• Vulvovaginitis
• Balanitis
• Trichomoniasis as subsidiary therapy
• Tinea versicolor
• Eritrasma
• Sanitation of the maternal passages before delivery

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Menses
• Pregnancy

The drug should be used with caution during lactation. To prevent reinfection both sexual partners must be treated. The patient should avoid contaminating the eye with the preparation. In patients with compromised liver function periodical liver tests should be done. If any signs of hypersensitivity or irritation appear the treatment should be stopped.

Side effects: Drugs may cause side-effects which in specific patients may manifest differently.
