The drug is used locally or intra-vaginally and topically. Clotrimazole works by decreasing the synthesis of ergosterol which is a part of a fungal cell wall, this leads to changes in the structure and permeability of the cell wall. In low concentrations the drug exerts fungi-static activity and in high concentration fungicidal activity. In fungicidal concentrations the drug also interacts with the mitochondrial and peroxidative enzymes which results in increased concentration of hydrogen peroxide this also promotes the destruction of fungal cells.
