Drug name: Brand Pharmatex

Active substance: Benzalkonium Chloride

Pharmacological effects: Pharmatex belongs to a group of drugs that are used for local contraception. The active ingredient of Pharmatex is benzalkonium chloride. The drug works by damaging the spermiums membrane thus leading to inability of the spermium to impregnate the ovule. The destruction of sperm cells is achieved in 20 seconds after contact with the substance. The dose of the preparation is calculated to neutralize one ejaculation that is why for the repeated sexual intercourse another dose of the preparation is needed. Besides the spermicidal effect the preparation also expresses specific antimicrobial activity. The preparation has no effect on the normal vaginal flora.

The effects of the preparation vary by the form:

• Vaginal suppositories - exert effects after 5 minutes after insertion and are active for the period of sexual contact or for 4 hours.
• Vaginal tablets - need to be inserted 10 minutes prior to the intercourse and work for 3 hours after the insertion.
• Vaginal capsules - start working in 8-10 minutes after the insertion and are efficient for 4 hours or for one sexual intercourse.
• Vaginal cream - starts working immediately after insertion and is active for 10 hours
• Tampons - starts working immediately and is active for 24 hours or 3 sexual contacts.

Indications: Pharmatex is a local contraceptive that is recommended for use in women which are contradicted to use other more efficient contraceptive methods. The preparation is recommended for use in women:

• After pregnancy
• Nursing mothers
• After abortions
• On later reproductive stages
• Before menopause
• With irregular sexual activity

Pharmatex may also be used as a subsidiary contraceptive with other contraceptives:

• Loops
• Condoms
• Contraceptive cap
• Diaphragm
• In cases of irregular use of hormonal contraceptives
  

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Infections of the urogenital tract
• Ulcers and erosions of the uterus or the cervix

It must be understood by the patient that baths and contact of the preparation with water decreases the spermicidal activity of Pharmatex thus must be avoided for the time of preparation use.

Side effects: Drugs may cause side-effects which in specific patients may manifest differently.
