Drug name: Brand Yasmin

Active substance: Ethinylestradiol, Drospirenone

Pharmacological effects: Yasmin belongs to a group of drugs called contraceptives. It is used to prevent pregnancy the drug also exerts andtiandrogen activity. The contraceptive effect is associated with suppression of ovulation and increase in viscosity of the cervixes mucous. Thus endometrium becomes unprepared for the egg implantation leading to the desired contraceptive effect. The increase in viscosity on its side obstructs the sperm penetration to the uterine cavity. The drug does not cause weight changes and due to the unique ingredient drospirenon may prevent fluid retention that is associated with other contraceptive means. The drug also affects the lipid concentration leading increased concentrations of high density lipoproteins. The antiandrogenic activity of Yasmin leads to decreased production of seborrhea glands, and increased production of globulins. Same as any other contraceptive Yasmin eases menstrual cycles and decreases the pain sensation during menses.

Indications: Yasmin is indicated to prevent pregnancy, but also may be used in the following conditions:

• Acnea treatment in women from 14 years old
• Premenstrual dysphoric syndrome

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Venal or arterial thrombosis
• Conditions prior to thrombosis
• Diabetes
• Severe liver disease
• Liver tumors
• Acute or chronic renal dysfunction
• Hormone dependent tumors
• Unidentified vaginal bleeding
• Pregnancy
• Lactation period

Yasmin should be used with caution in the following:

• Thrombosis predisposition
• Different cardiovascular disease
• Obesity
• Long-term immobilization
• Surgery

• Krone's disease
• Ulcerous colitis
• Jaundice
