Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are endogenous substances that are normally produced  in the body by the adrenal glands. These substances affect many systems of the organism and take part in such processes as:

• Inflammation regulation
• Protein, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism
• Water-electrolyte levels
• Immune response
• Behavioral changes

Chemically corticosteroids can be divided in two major groups:

• Glucocorticoids among them – Triamcinolone(Kenalog) and Methylprednisolone (Medrol)
• Mineralcorticoids such as Aldosterone

The preparation which contains corticosteroids or namely glucocorticoids may be used for different purposes for example:

• Topical steroids which are used in treatment local inflammation (hydrocortison)
• Inhaled steroid preparation used in treatment of asthma attacks (Beclomethasone)
• Oral forms of the preparation which can be used orally like (Prednisolone)
• Systemic forms used for injections like Triamcinolone and (Methylprednisolone)
