Drug name: Generic Glucovance

Active substance: glyburide and metformin

Pharmacological effects: Glucovance is a peroral hypoglycemic preparation that contains two active ingredients(glyburide and metformin).  Glyburide works by stimulating the production of insulin by the  β-cells of the pancreatic gland. Glybiride also increases the sensitivity of the insulin receptors, located on the surface of the cells, to insulin.  Metformin helps to increase the glucose utilization by the cells. Metformin also decreases the absorption of glucose in the intestinal mucous lining, normalizes lipid metabolism and enhances the processes of fibrinolysis.

Indications: Glucovance is approved to treat diabetes  type 2

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Diabetes type I
• Low blood sugar levels
• Diabetic lactoacidosis
• Diabetic precoma
• Coma
• Severe diseases manifested in kidney and liver failure
• Hypoxic conditions
• Porphyria
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Simultaneous application of iodine-containing contrast agent

Glucovance side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. • The most common Glucovance side effects include: low blood sugar levels, upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and dizziness.
• The less commin Glucovance side effects: signs of lactic acidosis, signs of high blood sugar levels, signs of low blood sugar levels, chest pain and dermatological reactions.
