Drug name: Brand Xalatan

Active substance: Latanoprost

Pharmacological effects: Latanoprost is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandine F2-alpha which causes anti-glaucomic action. Decreases intraocular pressure through increasing the removal of aqueous humor. The drug does not affect the production of aqueous humor, nor affect the permeability of the blood-ocular barrier. The drug may also change the size of the pupil. The decrease of intraocular pressure is achieved in 3-4 hours after administration and the maximum effect is reached after 8-12 hours.

Indications: Xalatan is indicated in treatment of:

• Open-angled glaucoma
• Increased intraocular pressure

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.

The drug should be used with caution during:

• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Young age

The drug may change the color of the eyes to brown due to increased production of the pigment. In cases of intensive eye color change the drug needs to be discontinued. Contact lenses should be removed before the application of the preparation and inserted only in 15 minutes after administration. Caution should be exerted when driving or operating complex machinery due to possible blerred vision after application of Latanoporst.

Side effects: Drugs may cause side-effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. In the following paragraph we want to underline the most serious and frequent side effect of Xalatan that  were identified by the drug manufacturers. The possibility of the adverse effect manifestation depends only on the individual and his specific traits. Latanoprost side effects include:

• Local reactions: The feeling of a foreign matter in the eye, conjunctiva hyperemia, transitory local epithelial erosions, macular edema, retina hyperpigmentation, constant heterochromia (if only one eye is treated), increase of the palpebral fissure
• Allergic reactions: rash and etc.
