Drug name: Cavinton

Active substance: Vinpocetine

Pharmacological effects: Cavinton is herbal-based medication that improves brain's circulation and metabolism, increase the resistance of the brain cells to ischemia. Cavinton works by selectively enhancing cerebral blood flow and cerebral fraction of the minute volume, reduces the resistance of the cerebral blood vessels. Cavinton does not change blood pressure, minute volume, heart rate and peripheral resistance.

Cavinton significantly improves brain's circulation, retards platelet's aggregation, lowers the high blood viscosity. Cavinton also improves intracellular glucose metabolism and oxygen utilization. The medication increase the amount of catecholamines in the brain cells(neurons)

Indications: Cavinton is approved to treat the following conditions:

• Acute and chronic deficiency of the blood circulation(transient ischemia, stroke, dementia, atherosclerosis of the cerebral arteries, post traumatic and hypertensive encephalopathy)
• Psychotic and neurological disorders in patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency(memory impairment, dizziness, headache, aphasia, apraxia and locomotor problems
• Vascular diseases of the eye associated with atherosclerosis and angiospasms
• Otorhinolaryngological practice(decrease in hearing, presbyacusis, Meniere's disease, buzzing in the ears, dizziness)
• Vegetative symptoms of the climacteric period

Warnings and Precautions: Cavinton should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Acute stage of bloodstroke(only for parenteral use)
• Coronary heart disease(only for parenteral use)
• Arrhythmia(abnormal heart rhythm)
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding

Cavinton side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. The most common Cavinton side effects include: drop in blood pressure and, increased heart rate and stomach disturbances. When Cavinton is used parenterally it may cause dizziness, flushing, nausea and thrombophlebitis in the place of injections.
