Drug name: Generic Isodril

Active substance: Isosorbide dinitrate

Pharmacological effects: Isosorbide dinitrate is a vasodilating agent that preferably affects veins. The drugs stimulates the formation of nitrogen oxide that leads to formation of vasodilating mediators which in their turn dilate the vessels. The drug also decreases the oxygen consumption of the myocardium through the decrease in pre- and after-load. The drug also exerts coronary dilating effect. Isodril promotes redistribution of coronary blood flow to the areas with decreased blood circulation increasing tolerance to physical exercise in patients with Ischemic heart disease and angina. The drug dilates cerebral vessels, thus may cause headaches. A possibility of cross-tolerance development to other nitrates exist. The sensitivity to the preparation is restored after a short period of withdrawal.

Indications: the drug is indicated in treatment of the following disease:

• Angina pectoris
• Acute myocardial infraction
• Post myocardial infraction period
• Coronary spasm
• Peripheral vessel spasm

Isodril is used as subsidiary therapy in:

• Chronic heart failure
• Pulmonary edema
• Pulmonary heart

The drug may be used for other conditions if prescribed by your doctor.

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Apoplectic shock
• Increased cerebral blood pressure
• Chronic cardial compression
• Cerebral hypertension
• Cardiac tamponade
• Hypovolemia

The drug should be used with caution in:

• Acute myocardial infraction
• In a short period of time after apoplectic shock and increased cerebral blood pressure
• Severe anemia
• Thyreotoxicosis
• Glaucoma
• Arterial hypotension
• Severe renal failure
• Liver failure
• Pregnancy
• Lactation
• Young age
• Malabsorption syndrome
• Increased gastrointestinal peristalsis

• CNS: somnolence, blurred vision, restraint, cerebral ischemia

• Other: tolerance development, exfoliative dermatitis
