Cerebrolysin, a unique neurotrophic drug with neuroprotective action
08/12/10
Cerebrolysin neurotrophic drug

For over 40 years Cerebrolysin has been produced by the company Ever Neuro Pharma (Austria).

Production technology of Cerebrolysin complies with good manufacturing practice (GMP). The manufacturing process of Cerebrolysin includes modern biotechnological methods, using standardized controlled enzymatic cleavage of highly purified protein of pig's brain. The constancy of the qualitative and quantitative composition of Cerebrolysin is ensured by strict quality control procedures, including amino acid analysis and HPLC peptide mapping.

Composition of Cerebrolysin includes a set of amino acids, neuropeptides, vitamins, macro-and micronutrients, antioxidant enzymes. Due to its unique composition, pharmacological effects of Cerebrolysin defines interconnected neurotrophic, neuroplastic and neuroprotective effects identical to the mechanisms of a human's neurophysiology. 18 biologically active amino acids and and peptides of Cerebrolysin are key components of cerebral metabolism which improve the metabolism in brain tissue. Cerebrolysin easily penetrates the blood-brain barrier, regulates the intracellular exchange, and improves the synaptic transmission of nerve impulses, increases aerobic energy metabolism, intracellular protein synthesis, reduces the content of lactic acid. Cerebrolysin also stimulates trans-synaptic transfer, increasing the survival of neurons during hypoxia and other damaging factors.

Currently, Cerebrolysin is the only neuroprotector whose action is similar to that of natural growth factors such as: NGF (nerve growth factor), CNTF (ciliary neurotrophic factor), GDNF (glial neurotrophic factor), IGF-1 and IGF-2 (growth factor Insulin 1-2 types) with proven in vivo and in vitro neurospecific activity. This defines its neurotrophic and neuroplastic activity and the impact on reparative and regenerative mechanisms. As a neuroprotector, Cerebrolysin protects brain cells from hypoxia, ischemia, due to its ability to influence every part of the ischemic cascade in the scenario development of cell death.

Cerebrolysin also shows a positive influence in cognitive dysfunction, improves concentration and the processes of memorizing and reproducing information related to short-term memory, increases ability to acquire and maintain skills, intensifies the process of mental activity, improves mood, promotes positive emotions, thus having a simulating influence on human's behavior.

At the moment Cerebrolysin is registered and used in more than 45 countries for treatment of stroke, dementia, head injury and its consequences. In Canada the drug is used in the clinical practice in a special program of launch and use of emergency drugs. In the U.S. Cerebrolysin has the status of a new drug, allowed by the Food and Drug Administration for clinical use in private.

Many reputable experts believe Cerebrolysin to be a market leader among neuroprotective drugs. The guidelines for treatment of stroke developed by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association - AHA / ASA in 2007 noted that the study of Cerebrolysin, a drug with potential neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties, has proven its safety and ability to improve outcomes.

Research, experimental data, and clinical experience have revealed a dose-dependent efficacy of Cerebrolysin. Acute conditions require the use of 30-50ml of the drug. Chronic hypoxic processes, asthenic conditions, etc. require 5-20ml of Cerebrolysin.
