The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) 2007 CIR Compendium is now available. It contains concise information on more than 1,300 safety assessments of individual cosmetic ingredients. "The CIR Compendium is a must for dermatologists, chemists, toxicologists, and industry and consumer safety groups," said Wilma Bergfeld, M.D., chair of CIR's Expert Panel and head of clinical research and dermatopathology at The Cleveland Clinic's Department of Dermatology. This resource volume identifies: - 784 ingredients found safe as used in cosmetic formulations; - 408 ingredients that may be used safely if qualifications are heeded; - 119 ingredients for which the available data are insufficient to support safety; and - 9 ingredients considered unsafe for use in cosmetics. A quick reference table is also included in the 2007 CIR Compendium that allows the reader to access basic information in a tabular format. For the past several years, the CIR Expert Panel has re-reviewed ingredients for which safety assessments were completed in the early 1980s. Those ingredients for which the Panel has considered available new data and reaffirmed its conclusions are identified in a separate listing in the 2007 CIR Compendium, making it a truly comprehensive reference regarding cosmetic ingredient safety assessment. Established in 1976 by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the CIR independently reviews the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open public forum. Their findings are published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Toxicology. Its seven voting medical and scientific members must meet the same conflict of interest standards as persons serving on the FDA's expert advisory committees. FDA, the Consumer Federation of America, and industry serve as non voting members on the CIR Expert Panel. TheCIR Compendium is a compilation of information taken from CIR's safety assessments.
