Worldwide, more than 100 million women give preference to oral contraceptives, and in such highly developed countries as Belgium, Holland, Great Britain, one third of women of childbearing age use oral birth control.
Scientists of the leading academic medical centers, are constantly developing new and better contraceptives. This takes into account two most important factors: reducing the dose of hormones and developing highly active and highly selective progestins (hormones of the second phase of the cycle). Reducing the dose of steroids minimizes side effects such as nausea, vomiting, breast tension, weight gain, headache, etc.
The lowest dose birth control pill is Logest manufactured by Schering AG (Germany), containing estrogen and progestin in the lowest doses possible. The Logest calendar package consists of 21 pills, each containing 0.02 mg ethinyl estradiol and 0.075 mg gestodena. This ratio (20/75) of the components provides high contraceptive reliability and reduces the incidence of adverse reactions.
The total hormonal load on a cycle is a total dose of progestin and ethinyl estradiol contained in the pills in one blister pack (one cycle). Thus, when taking Logest during one cycle, a woman receives less than 2 mg of female sex hormones in total.
Leading gynecologists recommend Logest to all healthy women to prevent unwanted pregnancy. In particular, Logest is the best choice for those who has just began their experience with oral contraceptives. The first pill of the first Logest pack should be taken in the first day of menstruation. Logest provides contraceptive effect already during the first cycle of its use. It has to be taken 1 pill of Logest a day (preferably at the same time) within 21 days (21 pills in the pack). After that you should make the 7-day break, during which you will have menstruation. As a result, you will always have a regular 28- day menstrual cycle (21 tablets per day + 7 day break). Logest is effective for dysmenorrhea as well - menstruation becomes regular, less abundant and painless.
The contraceptive effect of Logest is realized due to the blocking effect of gestagen and estrogen components on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian system governing the normal menstrual cycle, and is concerned primarily with the gestagen's ability to inhibit the synthesis of FSH and luteinizing hormone, thereby to suppress ovulation. Logest's contraceptive effect is strengthened by ethinylestradiol, a synthetic analogue of the follicular hormone estradiol.
Along with this mechanism, inhibiting the maturation of an egg capable to fertilize, the contraceptive effect of Logest is also due to increased viscosity of cervical mucus, making it relatively impenetrable to sperm. According to B. Dusterberg, during a three-year study involving 670 women encompassing more than 19 000 cycles, the Pearl Index during Logest administration was 0.07, that is equivalent to 7 pregnancies in 10 000 women. It has been recorded only one pregnancy, which occurred because of violations of the pills use (the error of the patient), while the error of the method is equal to zero.
Logest is well tolerated and has almost no effect on metabolism and body weight, it can be taken indefinitely until the pregnancy is not desired.
