Drug name: No-spa

Active substance: drotaverine

Pharmacological effects:

No-SPA belongs to a group of medicines called spasmolytics.  Drotaverine acts on the smooth muscles via inhibiting the enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4. The inhibiting of this enzyme causes the increase of cAMP that inactivates the chain of myosin kinase. All of these leads to the relaxation of the smooth muscles. Drotaverine does not act on the cardiovascular system. The medication is effective in spasms of the smooth muscles of the nervous and muscular origin. Drotavetin acts on the smooth muscles of the digestive system, bile expelling passages as well as passages of the urogenital system. No-Spa also helps to improve blood flow to the tissue.

Indications: The medication is used to treat the following conditions:

• Spasms of the smooth muscles related to the diseases of the biliary system; gallstone disease, cholecystitis, cholangitis, papillitis
• Physiological act of delivery(reduction in duration of delivery(for intravenous injections)
• Spasms of the smooth muscles of the digestive system: stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, enteritis, colitis
• Tension type headache
• Acute labor pains

Warnings and Precautions: The drug should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Severe liver and kidney diseases
• Severe heart failure
• Collapse
• Cardiogenic shock
• Children under 1 years of age(for tablets)
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding

No SPA should be used with caution in low blood pressure, AV block I and II degree, closed-angle glaucoma, atherosclerosis, hyperplasia of the prostate gland

No Spa side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. In the following paragraph we want to underline the most serious and frequent side effect of No-spa that  were identified by the drug manufacturers. The possibility of the adverse effect manifestation depends only on the individual and his specific traits. No-spa side effects include:

• Digestive system: nausea and constipation
• CNS: headache, dizziness and insomnia
• Cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, low blood pressure
• Other: allergic reactions
