Drug name: Brand Voltaren

Active substance: Diclofenac sodium

Pharmacological effects: Voltaren contains the active ingredient diclofenac sodium that belongs to a group of medicines called NSAID's. Diclofenac sodium exerts anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action. Action mechanism of the medications arises from the inhibiting the enzyme called cyclooxygenase(COX) that is responsible for the production of inflammatory mediators. Analgesic effect is caused by the lowering the sensitivity of the nerve fibers. Antipyretic action is related to lowering of prostaglandines in the heat-regulating center.

Indications: Inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the locomotor system: Rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, osteoarthrosis,  spondyloarthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis(for coated tablets and rectal suppositories)

• Diseases of the spinal column manifested in pain syndrome
• Rheumatoid diseases of the soft tissues
• Acute attack of gout(only for coated tablets)
• Post traumatic and postoperative pain syndrome manifested in inflammation and edema
• Gynecological diseases manifested in pain syndrome
• Migraine attacks(only for suppositories)
• Postoperative inflammation of the soft tissue and joints
• Pain syndrome and edema

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Stomach and duodenal ulcers
• Bronchial asthma
• Acute rhinitis
• Diabetes
• Proctitis (for suppositories)
• Cardiovascular diseases including heart failure and high blood pressure
• Liver diseases
• Bleedings
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Let your doctor know if you drink too much alcohol and smoke prior to taking Voltaren

• The most common Voltaren side effects include:tinnitus, itching, rash, headache, swelling, dizziness, anemia, vomiting, nausea, peptic ulcer, bleedings, heartburn, gas, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain
• The less common Voltaren side effects include: chest pain, breathing problems, stomach problems, liver damage, kidney problems, fluid retention
