Pharmacological effects: Salbutamol is a β2-adrenomimetic which exerts broncholytic and tocolytic effects. The drug selectively stimulates β2-adrenoreceptors, activates intracellular adenylate cyclase. The broncholytic effect is associated with relaxation of smooth bronchial muscle. The drug relaxes the uterine and decreases the contractility of myometrium, preventing premature childbirth. If inhaled 10-20% of the preparation reaches the small bronchi and is slowly absorbed, some of the preparation after swallowing is absorbed in the GI tract. The drug also affects metabolism by decreasing the potassium levels in plasma, glycogenolysis and insulin release, exerts hyperglycemic and lypolitic effect, increases the risk of acidosis development.

Indications: Salbutamol may be prescribed by your doctor for the treatment and prophylaxis of:

• Bronchospasm in bronchial asthma
• Broncho-obstructive syndrome
