Drug name: Brand Imodium

Active substance: Loperamide

Pharmacological effects: Imodium contains the active ingredient loperamide hydrochloride that is anti-diarrheal agent. Imodium works by binding to the opioid receptors in the bowel and helps to reduce the motility and tonicity of the bowel's smooth muscles. This in its turn allows more time for electrolytes and fluids to be absorbed from the intestinal content back into the blood circulation, making stools firmer. Therapeutic effect of the medication occurs quickly and lasts nearly 4-6 hours. Lopamid does affect intestinal microflofa.

Indications: Imodium is approved for the treatment of the following conditions:

• Acute diarrhea in adults and children over 12 years of age
• Acute diarrhea related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adults over 18 years of age
• Regulation of the bowel movement in patients with ileostomy
• Diarrhea associated with functional disturbances of the bowel

Warnings and Precautions: Imodium should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Bowel’s obstruction
• Diarrhea caused by the antibiotics therapy
• Constipation
• Acute ulcerous colitis
• Pseudo membranous enterocolitis
• Diverticulitis
• Bacterial diarrhea(caused by Salmonella, Shigella or Campylobacter)
• Diarrhea manifested in fever, blood stool with mucus
• Children under 12 years of age
• Liver diseases
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding

Imodium side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently.
