Active substance: domperidone

Pharmacological effects: Motilium contains the active ingredient domperidone that belongs to antiemetic preparations. Motilium works by inhibiting the activity of the dopamine receptors in the brain (trigger zone). However, domperidone slowly penetrates through the blood-brain barrier and, thus does not cause extrapyramidal side effects.

Motilium helps to increase the duration of antral and duodenal contractions, speeds up gastric emptying. Domperidone does not affect stomach secretion.

Indications: Motilium is approved for the treatment of the following conditions:

• Complex of dyspeptic symptoms manifested in decreased gastric emptying, gastroesophageal reflux, esophagitis
• Nausea and vomiting of the functional, organic and infectious origin
• Nausea and vomiting caused by radiation, drug therapy, agonists of dopamine receptors (Parkinson disease treatment)

Warnings and Precautions: Motilium should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Gastrointestinal bleedings
• Intestinal obstruction
• Perforations of the gastrointestinal tract
• Prolactin-secreting pituitary tumor
• Children under 5 years of age
• Liver diseases

The medication should be used with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding

Motilium side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently.
