Active Ingredients: Levothyroxine

Pharmacological effects:

Levothyroxine is an efficient and safe remedy of replacement and suppressive therapy for most diseases of the thyroid gland. It represents a synthetic thyroid hormone; levogyratory isomer of thyroxine (T4). The drug regulates the metabolism, stimulates growth, development, metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, increases the functional activity of the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

Indications:

  • Hypothyroid states of different etiologies: primary and secondary hypothyroidism, congenital and acquired hypothyroidism; cerebrohypophyseal diseases that occur with hypothyroidism, obesity with symptoms of hypothyroidism, myxedema, cretinism, hypothyroidism after surgery or as a result of thyroiditis (including autoimmune)
  • Euthyroid benign goiter, euthyroid hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, thyroid suppressive therapy of multinodular goitre (as monotherapy or in combination with potassium iodide)
  • Thyrostatic treatment of hyperthyroidism after reaching the euthyroid state; diffuse toxic goiter after compensation of hyperthyroidism with thyreostatics (monotherapy or in combination therapy)
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease (combination therapy)
  • thyrotropin dependent highly differentiated papillary or follicular thyroid carcinomas (combination therapy)
  • replacement therapy and prevention of recurrence of goiter after thyroid gland resection
  • replacement therapy and prevention of recurrence after surgical treatment of thyroid malignancy (thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer)
  • differential diagnostic test of thyroid suppression (as a diagnostic agent)

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

  • hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
  • untreated thyrotoxicosis
  • severe coronary insufficiency, acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris
  • severe atherosclerosis
  • acute myocarditis
  • severe arrhythmias
  • severe congestive heart failure
  • severe hypertension
  • uncontrolled adrenal insufficiency, untreated Addison's disease
  • elderly patients (over 65)

Side effects: Drugs may cause side-effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. The possibility of the adverse effect manifestation depends only on the individual and his specific traits. Levothroid side effects include:

  • tachycardia, arrhythmia, angina (chest pain), tremors
  • sleep disturbances, insomnia, weakness, anxiety
  • increased sweating, hyperhidrosis, loss of body weight
  • vomiting, diarrhea , hyperglycemia
