Pharmacological effects:

Levoxyl is a synthetic levogyratory isomer of thyroxine. After partial transformation into triiodothyronine (in the liver and kidneys) and passage to the cells of the body, the drug affects the development and growth of tissues and on the metabolism. Levoxyl in small doses has anabolic effects on protein and fat metabolism. In medium doses, the drug stimulates the growth and development, increases the oxygen demand of tissues, stimulates the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, increases the functional activity of the cardiovascular system and central nervous system. In high doses, levothyroxine inhibits production of thyrotropin-releasing hormone of hypothalamus and pituitary TSH. The therapeutic effect is observed in 7-12 days of the treatment. Clinical effect in hypothyroidism is manifested in 3-5 days. Basedow's disease is reduced or disappears within 3-6 months.

Indications:

• hypothyroidism
• euthyroid goiter
• as a replacement therapy and for prevention of recurrent goiter after thyroid gland resection
• thyroid cancer (after surgery)
• toxic goiter: after reaching the euthyroid state with thyreostatics
• as a diagnostic drug during the thyroid suppression test

Warnings and Precautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• untreated hyperthyroidism
• acute myocardial infarction, acute myocarditis

Precautions:

• atherosclerosis, angina, myocardial infarction in the history
• hypertension
• arrhythmia
• diabetes mellitus
• heavy long-existing hypothyroidism
• malabsorption syndrome

Side effects: Drugs may cause side-effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. • Tricyclic antidepressants
• Insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents
• Cardiac glycosides
• Anabolic steroids
• Asparaginase
• Tamoxifen
• Salicylates
• Anticonvulsants
• Diuretics in high doses
• Drugs containing estrogens
• Somatotropin
• Antituberculosis drugs
