Pharmacological effects: Progesterone is a gestagenic preparation, it is a hormone of the yellow body. Progesterone bind to specific receptors of the cells, then penetrates into cell nucleus where activates DNA and stimulates RNA. Progesterone contributes to the proceeding of the uterine mucous lining from the proliferation phase into secretory one. Proegesterone is an essential hormone for the development of the fertilized egg. Progesterone lowers the excitability and contractility of the uterine and uterine tubes mucous lining. Progesterone stimulates the development of mammary gland's end cells.

Progesterone also stimulates proteinlypase, increases fat stores, stimulates glucose utilization and production of gonadotrophins by the pituitary gland, contributes to the production of the normal endometrium.

Indications: Progesterone is approved for the treatment of the following conditions:

For the oral use:

• Premenapause
• Dysmenorrhea
• Mastopathy
• Conditions associated with deficiency of gestagens
• Substitute therapy of menapause(in combination with estrogen medication)

For the intra-vaginal application(Utrogestan capsules):

• Substitute hormonal therapy associated with progesterone deficiency caused by difunctioning of the ovaries.
• The maintenance of lutein phase during the preparation for the extracorporeal fertilization
• The maintenance of lutein phase in the spontaneous or induced menstrual cycle
• Sterility associated with lutein phase deficiency
• Miscarriage prophylaxis related to progesterone deficiency
• The threat of pregnancy disruption
• Endocrine sterility

Warnings and Precautions: Progesterone should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Tendency to thrombosis
• Acute phlebitis and thromboembol
• Bleeding of unknown origin
• Incomplete miscarriage
• Porphyria
• Malignant neoplasms of the mammary gland or genitals
• Severe liver diseases

Progesterone should be used with caution in cardiovascular diseases, arterial hypertension, chronic kidney failure, diabetes, bronchial asthma, depression, high lipids blood levels.

Progesterone side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently.
