Drug name: Progestogel

Active substance: progesterone

Pharmacological effects: Progestogel contains the active ingredient progesterone. Progestogel works by blocking estrogen and prolactin receptors. This helps to lower milk production, increase the absorption of fluids from the tissue and decrease the compression of the milk ducts. Progesterone does not exert systemic action.

Indications: Progestogel is approved to treat the following conditions:

• Mastodynia associated with hormonal replacement therapy, pregnancy, puberty period, premenopause, premenstrual tension syndrome, mastopathy)
• Chronic cystic mastitis

Warnings and Precautions: Progestogel should not be used in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations.
• Node-positive cystic mastitis
• Breast cancer
• Porphyria
• Acute phlebitis and thromboembolia
• Tendency to thrombosis
• Tumors of the mammary gland or genitals
• Pregnancy

Progestogel should be used with caution: kidney and liver dysfunction, bronchial asthma, epilepsy, migraines, depression, high lipid blood levels, extrauterine pregnancy, miscarriage, vaginal bleedings of unknown origin, high blood pressure(hypertension), diabetes

Progestogel side effects: Drugs may cause side effects which in specific patients may manifest differently. In the following paragraph we want to underline the most serious and frequent side effect of Progestogel that were identified by the drug manufacturers. The possibility of the adverse effect manifestation depends only on the individual and his specific traits.

• The most common Progestogel side effects include: erythema, edema of the lips and neck, fever, headache, nausea. In rare cases: pain in the mammary gland, hot flashes, decreased libido and metrorrhagia.
